Once again, the best Monastrell from Jumilla

There are accolades that feel particularly rewarding. Not only because they recognise the work carried out over the course of a whole year, but also because they confirm that the path we have chosen is the right one. In 2025, we are once again celebrating news that fills us with pride: Bodegas Luzón has once again taken centre stage at the 32nd Jumilla DOP Wine Quality Competition, becoming the only winery to receive four awards in this edition.

Once again, our wines occupy a prominent place on the podium of the appellation’s finest wines. And they do so in a competition that has established itself as one of the most important benchmarks for measuring the excellence of wines produced under the Jumilla Protected Designation of Origin.

Last Thursday, at a ceremony held in Santa Ana del Monte which brought together around 270 industry professionals, the twelve winning wines of the competition were announced. The awards were shared amongst seven wineries, although we were the only ones to secure four accolades.

The jury, comprising sommeliers, oenologists, journalists and specialist trainers, awarded twelve gold medals to the highest-scoring wines in each category, provided they scored over 90 points. The standard in this year’s competition was particularly high, with a total of 26 wines managing to surpass that benchmark of excellence.

In this highly competitive setting, our Luzón Colección Monastrell Organic 2025 wine shone in its own right and became the star of the evening.

The star of the competition

If there was one name that really stood out during the awards ceremony, it was Luzón Colección Monastrell Ecológico 2025. Our wine won no fewer than three awards, establishing itself as one of the essential benchmarks for understanding the potential of the Monastrell grape in our region.

The wine received the award for best young red wine aged without oak, as well as two highly significant special mentions: Best Organic Wine and Best Monastrell Wine of the competition.

This triple accolade highlights not only the quality of the wine, but also the work carried out in the vineyard and our winery’s commitment to environmentally responsible viticulture.

It is no coincidence that Jumilla’s finest Monastrell once again bears the Bodegas Luzón label. The region’s flagship grape variety finds exceptional conditions in our vineyards to express its full character.

A wine that captures the essence of Jumilla

Luzón Monastrell Organic Collection 2025 is a young red wine made exclusively from 100% Monastrell, sourced from different vineyards where the altitude and diversity of soils lend it complexity and character.

The grapes are harvested by hand into 150-kilo crates. After harvesting, the grapes are kept for 48 hours in a cold store at 8 ºC to preserve all their freshness and aromatic potential. The bunches are then carefully selected before controlled fermentation begins, lasting between eight and ten days, without the temperature exceeding 26 ºC and whilst maintaining contact with the skins to extract the full varietal expression.

The result is a wine of intense purple colour that stands out for its aromatic elegance. On the nose, there are notes of cherry, strawberry and black plum, accompanied by delicate spicy nuances. On the palate, it is juicy, fresh and enveloping, with a long, vibrant and very persistent finish.

In short, an authentic interpretation of organic Monastrell that perfectly embodies the identity of the Jumilla DOP.

A fourth award for Origen de Luzón Syrah 2024

The evening also gave us another important reason to celebrate. Our Origen de Luzón Syrah 2024 received an award in the category for red wines aged in oak for more than six months.

This award confirms the versatility of our winery and the ability of our wines to excel across different winemaking styles. From the freshest and most expressive young reds to aged wines, we remain committed to producing wines that convey the unique character of our region.

Jumilla, a land of great wines

To talk about these awards is also to talk about an extraordinary wine-growing region. The Jumilla DOP has been demonstrating to the world for decades the quality of its wines and the enormous potential of its vineyards. Its climatic conditions, its soils and the historical adaptation of the Monastrell grape have made this region one of Spain’s most renowned wine-growing areas.

A recognition that spurs us on to continue growing

Receiving four awards at the 32nd Jumilla DOP Wine Quality Competition is a source of immense satisfaction for our entire team. Behind every bottle lie months of work in the vineyard, technical decisions, a passion for detail and a firm commitment to quality.

But, above all, these accolades encourage us to keep moving forward. To continue exploring the potential of Monastrell, to uphold our commitment to sustainability, and to keep producing wines capable of stirring the soul.

Because when a glass of wine manages to convey the landscape, climate and history of a region, we are dealing with something more than just a wine.

And this year, once again, the finest example has been our Luzón Colección Monastrell Ecológico 2025, recognised as the best Monastrell from Jumilla.
