Last Saturday we premiered the new vintage of Altos de Luzón through a vertical tasting in which we were able to explore the most emblematic vintages of one of our most recognized references. A journey through time that took us from the 2003 vintage to the new 2019 vintage and from which only 8 people could benefit through a very special contest.

The new 2019 vintage, which is still committed to Monastrell as the only variety, following the footsteps of the 2018 vintage. A wine made with grapes from organically grown grapes from the area of La Melera, with goblet-trained vineyards, with an average age of 40 years and 650 meters above sea level. A wine tribute to the land and identity of a unique land, intrinsically linked to agriculture and a rugged landscape, but full of unusual beauty as is the Jumillano plateau.

As peculiarities of the 2019 vintage, it was a year that began with a winter of mild temperatures and low rainfall. A spring of abundant rainfall helped the vineyard to remain robust during the summer, with good vegetation. Even so, there was a tight production, with small-caliber grapes, good acidity, freshness and concentration that have made this vintage, as was seen in the vertical tasting, a wine of great power, long and intense, fruity and with the right taming that the 12 months in oak barrels apply to the wine.

Throughout the vertical tasting presentation, the attendees were able to make the sensory journey that transported them from the new 2019 vintage to the previous 2017, where the time in bottle offered a more tamed wine, with notes of butter, a more marked vanilla than in the 2019 vintage and very round in every way, which is indicative that without a doubt, Altos de Luzon is a wine that can perfectly withstand a couple of years of aging offering a different wine, more softened by the passage of time but with all the character that the Monastrell applies to it.

In the 2014 vintage, the journey through time took us to the Blend of Monastrell, Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon that characterized our wine for several years. In this case, the passing of the years presented us with a wine characterized by the notes typical of the triple blend, but with much more oak volume than that seen in 2017, with clear presence of notes of tobacco leaf, vanilla, etc… A mature wine that retains great length.

To finish, the 2005 and 2003 vintages were a leap back to the memory of our first vintages. Two wines that despite the passage of time, remained in very good shape.

A unique experience that served as a kick-off for our new Altos de Luzón 2019, which is already available!
