The Macabeo variety, or Viura as it is known in some spanish Denominations of Origin, is tremendously versatile in the winery and from it, different styles of wine can be produced, from delicate cavas and sparkling wines to single-varietal or blended white wines, whether young wines of medium acidity with floral and fruity aromas where herbs such as fennel can also be identified, or barrel-aged white wines with a succulent mouthfeel.

The Macabeo grapevine enjoys high yields and is highly resistant to frost, which is greatly favoring the increase in its cultivation, despite being very sensitive to Botrytis cinerea.

The bunches are large in size, compact in appearance, with large berries, thin skin and a beautiful golden color.

Its wines usually have an average alcoholic composition of 13º alcohol, with delicate, discreetly fruity aromas (apple and white peach) and a pale straw yellow color with greenish tones.

Macabeo at Bodegas Luzón

Macabeo is a variety that forms an important part of one of our most emblematic white wines, Luzón Colección Blanco, a wine made from a coupage of Macabeo and Sauvignon Blanc, varieties that are harvested mechanically in the early morning to obtain fresh bunches that arrive at the winery in optimum condition.

Once there, at the time of reception, the bunches are immediately de-stemmed and then lightly pressed to obtain the must, which is racked and clarified prior to fermentation for 15-20 days at a controlled temperature of between 10 and 16º C, in order to maintain the maximum expression of the fruit.

The resulting wine stands out for its pale yellow color where its vibrant greenish and bright reflections are striking; on the nose, the leading aroma of green apple, intermingled with citrus and tropical fruits; and on the palate, its unctuous entry, with a balanced acidity and a persistent finish.

A perfect wine to drink alone or with all kinds of seafood and shellfish dishes seasoned with garlic and parsley, as well as grilled or fatty fish prepared with mild sauces, fatty poultry such as duck or goose or vegetables in tempura or sautéed with ham and cheese.
